Project Overview
In Class C workshops and warehouses, some openings need to handle frequent daily traffic while also meeting fire protection requirements. LEFAST combines an HSR high-speed rolling door with an inorganic fire curtain, with each door handling a different function.
Challenge
The projects typically involve openings of around 3.5 m between workshop and warehouse areas. Vehicles and materials pass through frequently, while the building design also requires fire separation.
The initial requirement is often simply to install a fire-rated door. But the same opening is also used throughout the day for material and vehicle movement, so the door is expected to open and close frequently.
A fire curtain is designed for a different purpose. It normally stays open and closes when a fire occurs to separate the fire area. It is not designed for frequent, high-speed daily traffic.
A high-speed rolling door works in normal operation. It stays closed to separate the two areas and opens whenever vehicles or materials need to pass. Its flame-retardant curtain is self-extinguishing when removed from the flame, but it does not provide fire-rated separation.
LEFAST Solution
After reviewing the actual use of the opening, LEFAST proposed installing the two doors back-to-back, with one door on each side. The HSR high-speed rolling door is installed on the workshop side. Radar activation allows the door to open automatically when vehicles or materials approach. It handles the daily traffic, helping keep the workshop and warehouse areas separated and reducing dust transfer. The inorganic fire curtain is installed on the warehouse side. It provides the required fire separation.
Results
The two doors handle their respective functions without interfering with each other.
The HSR handles daily traffic. The fire curtain handles fire protection.
